Community - Jackson Area
Founded in 1829 and named after President Andrew Jackson, Jackson is located about 40 miles West of Ann Arbor. It is also known for being the birth place of the Republican party. It is the county seat of Jackson County.
The city has a population of over 33,000 people. Jackson has three major private employers CMS Energy, Michigan Automotive Compressor, Inc., and Jackson Flexible products. It also has two shopping malls: Westwood Mall west of town and Jackson Crossing.
The City of Jackson Parks, Recreation, and Grounds Department is responsible for the upkeep and improvement of 27 parks located throughout the city limits, including Ella Sharp Park, Nixon Park, and Martin Luther King Center.
Jackson is also known for its Hot Air Jubilee. In 1983 a group of Hot Air Balloon enthusiast who lived in and around Jackson came up with the dream of a family friendly event for the Jackson Community. The Hot Air Jubilee was born. Since then the Jubilee has grown to an event that thousands of people attend every summer. 35-40 Balloons come in from around the country to participate in the friendly rivalry of the contests.
